Championing Sustainable Agriculture : IPM Chili Program

At VKL, sustainability is more than a goal — it’s a guiding principle that shapes every aspect of our sourcing and production. One of our most impactful initiatives is our Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program for chili cultivation in South India, where we promote natural and eco-friendly methods of pest control to reduce chemical use and safeguard both health and the environment.

For over 15 years, VKL has driven a backward integration program across 20+ villages in South India, bringing together farmers, aggregators, and local communities in a collective effort to grow high-quality, IPM-certified chilies. From seed selection to harvest, we work hand-in-hand with stakeholders to ensure sustainable practices are followed at every step. By replacing chemical-heavy interventions with natural pest control techniques, we not only preserve soil and ecological health but also support long-term agricultural resilience.

Our commitment extends beyond cultivation. With farm-to-fork traceability enabled through a custom Android app, we offer transparency and trust to our customers, ensuring complete visibility into the journey of every batch of chili. This program reflects our belief that true sustainability starts at the source — with empowered farmers, responsible practices, and technology-driven transparency.

At VKL, our commitment to sustainability extends beyond sourcing and product innovation — it powers the very heart of our operations. In a major stride towards a cleaner, greener future, our Alleppey facility has installed a 320 kW rooftop solar plant, marking a significant milestone in our renewable energy journey.

This initiative is not just about energy efficiency — it’s about impact. The new solar installation helps us achieve an impressive carbon credit of 364 tons, significantly reducing our environmental footprint while supporting India’s broader clean energy goals. It reflects our proactive approach to integrating sustainability into every aspect of our business — from farm to factory.

VKL Seasoning’s manufacturing facility in Alleppey, Kerala, has been honored with the Kerala State Energy Conservation Award for the second consecutive year in the Medium Energy Consumers Category.

Presented by the Energy Management Centre (EMC), Government of Kerala, this recognition underscores our continued commitment to energy efficiency, responsible resource management, and sustainable manufacturing practices.

This initiative aims to restore the natural ecosystem around the canal by cleaning, landscaping, and maintaining the waterway and its surroundings. Beyond improving local aesthetics, the project helps enhance water flow, prevent pollution, support biodiversity, and create a healthier environment for nearby communities.
